Prepare your kids for success in Kindergarten by using some of these great tips.
- Visit the library.
- Read with your child everyday.
- Draw pictures of the people in your family.
- Play “I Spy” with colors, letters and numbers.
- Have your child move like different animals – hop like a rabbit, swim like a fish, fly like a bird, run fast like a cheetah.
- Play “Simon Says” and take turns being Simon.
- Ask your child to “read” familiar signs from fast food restaurants, the grocery store and other places you go regularly.
- Explore gardens and catch worms and bugs.
- Make sure your child is up to date on her immunizations and has received a vision and dental screening.
- Make your own alphabet book. Cut out pictures from magazines and newspapers.
- Play word games to teach opposites and rhyming.
- Encourage your child to play with other children his age – set up some play dates.
- Ask your child to follow directions that have two steps –“Take off your shoes and put them in the closet,” or “Pick up you r plate and put it in the sink.”
- Sort coins by size or toys by color.
- Sing familiar songs with your child like “The Alphabet song” or “Five Little Monkeys.”
- Have your child count out objects as she cleans up – “Put ten blocks in the basket.”
- Play with a ball or beanbag – have your child follow the directions and put the ball “under your chin,” “up in the air,” and “on the floor.”
